Wei
Yuan

Wei Yuan is a painter and conceptual artist based in Cambridge, UK . Born in Zhuzhou, Hunan province, China, she studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she completed her undergraduate and graduate studies, followed by the school’s post-diplôme research programme, focussed on independent work and critical inquiry.

Yuan explains she ‘approaches painting not as an end, but as a thinking device—an interface for structural experimentation’. My work engages material systems, spatial composition, and perceptual logic to investigate social relations, identity, and instability’.

This exhibition preents work from a number of series. In Presque Rien, she reflects a long-standing concern with order and visual control. Mind the Gap explores the challenges of migration, domesticity, and her prolonged withdrawal from public practice due to family commitment and in which she feels ‘my voice has matured’. Her works foreground ambiguity, rupture, and relational uncertainty as structural elements within image-making. Alchemy, her most recent body of work, expands these questions through mixed materials – stickers, toys, glitter – embedded into painterly systems of compression, layering, and displacement. Informed by anthropological and sociological thought, her practice explores how marginality, fragmentation, and perceptual ambiguity can be formalized within the visual field.

Her work has been exhibited in Paris, London, Cambridge, Nanjing, and Shanghai, and is held in private and institutional collections internationally.
